Nate Berkus Is Predicting the Return of This Antique Furniture Style

Barring a few notable exceptions (Memphis Group, we’re looking at you), the past few years in design have been, on the whole, pretty pared back. Considering Scandinavian style was the second-most Googled decor trend in 2018, it’s no surprise the pale wood–meets–calming neutrals look is pretty ubiquitous at this point. While hygge and minimalism don’t look to be going anywhere anytime soon, Nate Berkus is ready for a change. According to the designer, the vintage trend he’d most like to see make a comeback is moody wood furniture—specifically, mahogany.

“For a long time, there’s been such a huge interest in French mid-century and Italian mid-century and Swedish painted furniture, and I think all of that is still super-relevant, but I’m liking the idea of a classic mahogany George III chest of drawers,” says Berkus, referencing the regal, antique English style.

He recently incorporated a few such pieces in a dressing room for a client of his. “We also did pine paneling—that’s another thing I think is coming back, using pine for paneling and wainscotting,” he adds.

You heard the man: The dark side of decor is back. If you want to inch your way into this charming look without having your home go full-on 18th century (most mahogany items are of the vintage variety), we scoured our favorite retailers for some contemporary twists on the inky pieces.
For Your Entryway Burnt Alder Wood Everett Foyer Table, World Market ($329.99)
Add a modern light fixture to balance out this alderwood console’s Victorian-inspired silhouette, and you’ve got yourself a vignette that’s the perfect blend of old and new. Pick out some woven baskets to tuck into the bottom shelf for shoe storage.
For Your Closet Deluxe Tamboured Six-Drawer Dresser, Anthropologie ($2,298)
There’s plenty of space for all your foldable items in this ribbed rosewood dresser meant to mimic tamboured (aka rolling) doors. Created by British designer Tracey Boyd, the piece has a bit of English charm (that marble surface!), which makes it all the more special.
For Your Living Room  Chambley Sofa, Lulu & Georgia ($3,630)
With its extended oak frame that doubles as an end table, this cushy sofa is made for tight quarters. We predict it’ll be especially useful for movie nights, when you want your snacks close by.
For Your Workspace  Kent Mahogany Desk, CB2 ($1,199)
Glossy mahogany will instantly add a sophisticated vibe to even the smallest home office. Highlight its elegance with a vintage light fixture and not-your-standard rolling chair.
For Your Bedside Sandy Side Table, Anthropologie ($798)
Beaded wood legs take this solid oak piece from functional furniture to statement accent (the mirrored top doesn’t hurt either).
For Your Dining Area Stride Side Chair, Industry West ($195)
A set of these industrial, wood-veneer chairs will be the second most-talked about thing at the dinner party—after your tahini-glazed roasted carrots, of course.
For Your Bedroom Wright Bed, West Elm ($879.20+)
Invest in a bed frame that will last you for years to come, like this mahogany, mid-century–inspired design. Since it’s so simple, you can go wild with color and pattern on your linens. Who says antique-inspired pieces can’t be a little playful?
