How to Spring Clean Your Kitchen

With the warm weather approaching, you may be inspired to do some spring cleaning in your kitchen. Closet & Storage Concepts is here to help with some tips and tricks to make the decluttering and organizing process stress-free!

Step 1: Take Everything Out

The first step to getting organized in the kitchen is getting rid of anything that’s expired or that you no longer use. The best way to do this is to take everything out of your freezer, fridge, and pantry. Though this may take some time, going through and getting rid of expired items will not only make organizing easier, but it will also allow you more room for the items you actually do need!

Step 2: Wipe Down and Disinfect Everything

Now that you’ve taken everything out of your fridge and gotten rid of items you no longer need, it’s time to wipe down everything. Take some disinfectant wipes and clean your fridge, freezer, and the shelves in your pantry. Once you’re done cleaning the bigger items in your kitchen, move on to smaller appliances like coffee machines and toaster ovens. Though it is important to regularly clean these items, it is a good idea to thoroughly scrub everything when spring cleaning, so you have a clean slate to work with when you start to organize your items.

Step 3: Organize Your Items By Type in Clear Containers

Now that you’ve wiped down everything, it’s time to organize the items you’ve decided to keep! One great way to organize food items in your fridge is by separating them by type and storing them in clear containers. This will make finding things easier when cooking because you’ll be able to quickly see what you have and where it’s stored. For example, store all of your condiments in one section of the fridge, while putting all of your fruits and vegetables in another. If you have younger children, it may be a good idea to label these containers, so it makes it easier for them to know where an item goes when they’re no longer using it. The same system can be applied to your pantry as well! Store cereals and breakfast foods together while storing spices in another container or cabinet.

Step 4: Organize Your Dishware and Kitchen Utensils

The final step in the spring cleaning process is to organize your dishware and utensils. It is a good idea to wash the dishware that you use for special occasions, as those are the items you use less frequently and therefore are more likely to collect dust. Once you’ve washed the items, organize them by type. Put cereal bowls together in one cabinet and salad plates in another. Organize utensils by getting a drawer divider! Now is also a good time to get rid of any dishes that have chips in them or stains that you’re unable to remove.
