'Wordle' today: Here’s the answer, hints for May 6

Wordle game displayed on a phone and a laptop screen.

Happy Friday, nerds! So glad you've joined us for another day of working out the Wordle together. If you just want today's answer, word #321 can be found clearly marked down the bottom of this post — but if you want a buddy to help you with some subtler clues and tips, we've got those too.

In case you're new here: Wordle was invented by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his puzzle-loving partner and went super-viral in late 2021. His original game was bought by the New York Times earlier this year in a spicy seven-figure deal.

What's the best Wordle starter word?

Working that out definitively requires actual math, and we're not here for math — but fortunately, other people have worked it out for us. There are loads of options.

What's with all these other Wordle-style games? What's a Dordle?!

If you just want more Wordle, all at once, try Dordle and Quordle and the bigger numbers that lie beyond. If you want to capitalize on your nerdy knowledge, try these fandom-inspired versions, or test your ears with the music guessing game Heardle.

Is the New York Times making Wordle harder now?

Nope, that's your confirmation bias at work. It's the same old Wordle, with some "harder" words given the boot. But you can always switch on Hard Mode, which means you can't make any guesses that don't have previously confirmed letters in them. Ooooh.

Not the day you're after? Here's the Wordle answer and clues for May 5.

Where can I play all the old Wordles?

One a day not enough? The whole archive of past Wordles is available to play online.

Why are there sometimes two different Wordle answers on the same day?

As we've covered before, this is down to some changes the New York Times has made to Wardle's original word list to remove obscure, offensive, or confusing words.

Here's a hint for the May 6 Wordle answer:

If you added an R to the end, you'd get the name of an animal.

Wordle 321 is a 5-letter word that starts with...

Bzzz bzzz bzzzz... the letter B!
