Roll A Snowman

I don’t know about you, but it’s been my experience that young kids LOVE games that involve dice. Have you noticed that, too? This snowman game gives your students the chance to play with dice while practicing important early math skills. All while having fun “building a snowman” on paper.

How to Prep the Free Printable Snowman Game

First, grab the materials you’ll need to get the roll a snowman game ready. Here’s what you might want to use (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):

We really just used a printer to get the game ready this time around! If you’re going to have the kids draw directly on the paper, that’s all you’ll need, too. If you want the games to be reusable, then plan to have a laminator or dry erase pockets available.

Then grab the items you’d like to use for playing the game, such as:

Once you have all the supplies, it’s time to prep the printable. There’s really not much to it! I did mention it’s super low-prep, right?

  • Get the roll a snowman printable from the bottom of this post.
  • Save it to your computer.
  • Open the file in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader.
  • Print the game, making as many copies as you need.
  • If you want the game to be reusable, laminate them or place them in dry erase pockets.

And that’s all there is to it. Now it’s time to let the students play!

How to Play Roll A Snowman

In addition to being almost no-prep, the snowman game is very simple to play. That simplicity doesn’t take away from how engaging the game is, though!

To play, children roll a die and then draw the appropriate item on the snowman outline. Your students can play the game individually, parallel with their peers, or even in pairs. That’s up to you and the kids.

Your students draw directly on the paper with markers, crayons, or colored pencils. If you have the games laminated or in dry erase pockets, they can use dry erase markers to dry on the game. Or have the kids use play dough to build their snowmen on the laminated versions.

I mentioned above that you can make some tweaks to this game if you want. Here are some ways to change things up:

  • Have the children use play dough to make three-dimensional snowmen next to the roll a snowman printable. They can roll the die and add play dough eyes, scarf, nose, arms, and hat.
  • Let the kids make their snowmen super goofy. If they roll a 1 multiple times, let the kids add multiple sets of eyes! Yes, you’ll see snowmen with 5 hats and 3 sets of arms, but that’s okay. It just extends the fun and learning.
  • See if your students want to make the game into a little race with their peers. Who can build a completed snowman first?
  • Make a small group version of roll a snowman using chart paper and a large die. The kids take turns rolling the die and drawing on the chart paper. This would be a fun way to introduce the snowman game printable.

What is Subitizing?

Basically, subitizing means being able to look at a set of objects and know how many objects there are without counting. As adults, we can roll a die, see the dots, and immediately recognize how many dots there are. Young children don’t have this same skill without some practice.

That’s why dice games are fun and easy ways to practice this concept with young children. Starting out, they can count the dots on the die to determine how many there are. With enough repetition, the kids will start recognizing the numbers faster and faster.

The roll a snowman game makes the process even easier for subitizing beginners. It has images of dice faces, without the corresponding numbers. This helps your students begin to recognize the number patterns most dice have. Which will help them cement what numbers those patterns represent.
