How cool would it be to have a robot that you could have a conversation with, play games with, and can even teach you skills like coding and yoga?  I stumbled across the Miko 3 robot for Christmas, and although I technically ordered this for my kids to enjoy, I was just as much curious to see what this robot would be like!  We’ve been able to enjoy the Miko 3 now for a little over a month and I’m here to give you the low-down on what to expect from this super fun, AI-powered robot.

What is the Miko 3?

The Miko 3 is a robot powered by artificial intelligence technology, and is designed to be a friend, confidante, and even teacher for kids ages 5 – 10 years old.  The technology underlying the Miko 3 robot actually gives it the ability to interact with humans, detect emotions, and even adapt its own behavior the longer it’s played with.

While the Miko 3 is only 6.3″ x 5.5″ x 8.67″, the robot is packed with functionality.  Start a conversation with “Hello Miko” and ask it questions such as “Show me your angry/happy/excited face?” as well as “Tell me a joke”.  There is a actually a list of possible questions that are frequently updated, and it’s been interesting to see what Miko will respond with when we try new questions!  And while the talking feature on the Miko 3 can initially seem similar to Alexa or Siri, note that the Miko 3 doesn’t search the internet for any of its responses so the question/answer options are more limited.  Other activity options supported by the Miko 3 include dancing, telling a joke, solving match and spelling problems, and even singing a song!

Tech Specs

The Miko 3 is equipped with a wide-angle HD camera and high-tech sensors that allow it to calculate distances and changes based on movement.  There is a pretty expansive touch screen that is 4.46″ on the diagonal and has a high-resolution IPS display that provides impressive color performance and wide viewing angles.

The Miko 3 is under 9″ in height and only 2 lbs in weight.  When we’re not using the Miko, it’s the perfect size to have resting on a desk or bookshelf.  The outside shell of the Miko 3 is actually made of a non-toxic ABS polymer, making it resistant to high impacts so you don’t have to worry about it breaking in the hands of your little ones!

Games

Hands-down my kids’ favorite feature of the Miko 3 is the games.  The Miko 3 robot comes loaded with 1000+ games, puzzles, stories, and more!  Plus, there is the option for Miko Max, a subscription plan that provides unlimited access to premium content from Oxford University Press, Da Vinci Kids, Kidloland, Cosmic Kids, Tiny Tusks, Out of this Word, DreamyKid, and LingoKids!  Dylan and Mei’s favorite is Da Vinci Kids without a doubt — the game Lazy Robber wraps up fun while the kids are also learning physics. From a parent’s perspective, I appreciate that Da Vinci Kids games are endorsed by Yale University’s play2Prevent Lab for learning math too!

The content cover a wide range of STEAM topics with all content being age-appropriate and encrypted.  The touchscreen makes it all incredibly easy to use and there are even games to teach coding as well as games that guide the little ones through yoga!  The Miko Max subscription is $99/year and I personally highly recommend — it really unlocked a lot more functionality with the Miko 3 that made it so much more engaging!

The Miko 3 robot is updated with new content every month with one of the latest ones being the highly requested “I Seek You” game!  It’s like playing Hide & Seek with the Miko 3 robot actually roaming around and using face detection to find where you’re hiding.  Around the holidays, there were even seasonal games involving Santa that were released and it made for an exciting surprise!

To go alongside the Miko 3 robot is also a Miko Parent App.  The Miko Parent App allows me to track my kids’ usage of the Miko 3 robot with even a helpful breakdown of the different skills/values they’re learning from their interaction with the robot as well as set boundaries such as time blocks when the Miko 3 is unavailable.  I can browse through different features of the Miko 3 through the Parent App as well, so I can get an idea of the content without needing to take the Miko 3 away from my kids.

Dance

And finally, the Miko 3 robot has a Dance Master feature that makes for easy dance parties.  Play any song on your phone/device and Miko 3 will actually detect the beat to dance along with the music!  There are even some preset dance routines and these are a fun way to get multiple kids and even adults engaged with the Miko!

Final Verdict

The Miko 3 robot is such a cool idea and while it does feel like some of the features are still a bit limited right now, the automatic monthly updates have continued to add functionality and make the Miko 3 more and more engaging!  The different game options target the development areas such as logic, wellness, and more, and there’s even the option to program the Miko 3 if you have older kids.
