Clutter Free Kids: What Are Some Back to School Tips for Clutter Free Kids?
I love the Staples commercial when the parent is happily shopping for school supplies as the children look dejected. I think it’s one of the best commercials ever.
I am going to share two quick tips for having a great start to back to school: creating a clutter-free study area, and setting up a filing system. Both of these tips can help with academic success.
Clutter Free Kids
First up, let’s talk about creating a study center for kids.
Keep a clutter-free study center for kids to concentrate on schoolwork to study, work on projects and read.
If possible, I’m going to encourage you to have only homework in this room or area. It doesn’t have to be an entire room, but definitely a designated space. The mind and body will get used to this and mentally and physically prepare to do homework. Keep this room clutter-free as much as possible.
More Tips for Clutter Free Kids
- Comfortable, but not too much. You don’t want them to be so relaxed that they fall asleep or lose their focus.
- Fresh air is great and can help keep them engaged in their studies.
- Try to remove as many distractions as possible. Too much noise and they can’t concentrate.
- Well lit. Make sure they can see well. Consider blue computer glasses if they spend a lot of time on the computer.
- No distractions. Make sure there’s not a t.v., games, headphones, etc, that will tempt them to stop studying or doing homework.
- Keep supplies here. Pencils, paper, compass….whatever they use regularly have a stash so they can easily get what they need when they need it instead of having an excuse to leave the study area.
- Awards/trophies/certificates. Remind them of what they’ve accomplished and help motivate them to keep going.
- A college t-shirt, report card, or whatever else reminds your children of their goals and what they’d like to achieve.
Create a filing system
Let’s next talk about a filing system for the kids to use. Keep this in the study area, too. This is one you will want to keep organized and clutter-free. If you set up a good system now, they can use it throughout their academic careers.
I know some kids might be going to all electronics, but I believe that many still use paper and get lots of it. Whether it is homework, handouts, study guides.
Going to suggest you file corrected homework, study materials.
Get a sturdy bankers box or plastic container. Create a folder for each subject: Math, English, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, Art, Sports, Music. I would also keep any notices, class schedule and report cards. If you have one for each child, it will make it easier to find anything school-related.
I am a big fan of creating a color-coding system that you can use everywhere: book bags, gym bags, book covers, homework binders, etc. So, create a color for each subject and use the color in the file or the subject tab. Most of us are visual learners and this will make it easier for you to locate something.
Don’t forget to go through and clear clutter if you have homework binders. File weekly so when it comes time for tests, you have everything you need to study!
How can you create a study center? What filing categories will you use to create your files? What have been your biggest challenges to set up a filing system or create a study area for your children?
Clear your clutter to create the life you choose, deserve and desire.
