3 Digit by 1 Digit Multiplication Using the Area Model
If your students are working on (and possibly struggling with) 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication, you might want to give the area model a try!
What is Area Model Multiplication?
The area model method is based on the equation that we use to find the area of a rectangle where we multiply the length times the width to find the area.
(L X W=Area)
When using the area model to multiply 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, we break down the 3-digit number into the expanded form and then multiply each part by the 1-digit number. We then add the partial products together. You can see an example of this in the anchor chart above.
How can students get more practice with Area Model Multiplication?
I love using Scoot games to help my students get out of their seats while they practice the skills we are working on. I developed this fun Christmas Area Model Multiplication Scoot Game to give students more practice with area model multiplication.
